The float tank was created by neurophysicist Dr John C Lilly over 60 years ago when he was doing research on brain waves and altered states of consciousness.
It looks like a large enclosed bathtub and they are usually built from fibreglass.
Our tub is an Australian made product by Apollo Float Tanks. They supply many reputable health facilities, including the Australian Institute of Sport.
Float tanks are designed to block out all external distractions, such as sights, sounds, tactile sensations and gravity.
It contains 30cm of water with 350kg of super-saturated Epsom salt dissolved in it.
This creates an environment similar to that of the Dead Sea, letting you float effortlessly on the surface of the water and enjoy a feeling of absolute weightlessness.
Once you are settled and in a complete relaxed state, as one client said: "It is impossible to tell which parts of your body are in the water and which aren't. Your brain is tricked into thinking you are floating in the air."
The buoyancy created by the epsom salt effectively removes the effects of gravity on the body, letting every single muscle in your body fully relax.
With earplugs in and the tanks interior light and music off (if you choose), the quietness and darkness will allow your mind to drift into a deep state of relaxation, creating a total disconnection of mind and body and most importantly the outside world!
Through many studies done over the years, here is a list of what floating can do for the body and mind!
