Scalp Micropigmentation

Scalp Micropigmentation—commonly known as SMP—is a specialised cosmetic tattooing procedure designed to create the appearance of closely shaven hair follicles or reduce the visible contrast between thinning hair and the scalp.

Using a fine needle and carefully selected pigment, thousands of tiny impressions are placed within the upper layers of the scalp. Each impression is designed to resemble an individual hair follicle. When the colour, spacing and placement are carefully matched to your existing hair, SMP can create a natural-looking shaved style or give thinning areas the appearance of greater density.

SMP does not grow new hair, prevent future hair loss or replace medical treatment. It is a visual camouflage technique designed to improve the appearance of the scalp.

What Can SMP Achieve?

Create a Shaved or Buzz-Cut Appearance

For clients experiencing extensive hair loss, SMP can replicate the appearance of a closely shaven head. The hairline, temples, sides and crown are carefully designed to create a balanced result that complements your facial features and age.

Add the Appearance of Density

SMP can be placed between existing hairs to reduce the contrast between the hair and visible scalp. This can make thinning areas appear fuller without attempting to create artificial-looking strands of hair.

Density treatments can be considered for both men and women, depending on the pattern of thinning and the amount of existing hair.

Refine the Hairline

A soft, broken and naturally graduated hairline can be created or strengthened to improve definition around the forehead and temples. The design is discussed with you before treatment and should complement your natural features rather than appearing unnaturally sharp or solid.

Camouflage Suitable Scalp Scars

SMP may help reduce the visual contrast of some fully healed scalp scars, including selected hair-transplant and surgical scars. Scar tissue responds differently from normal skin, so every scar must be assessed individually.

SMP disguises a scar—it does not remove the scar or change its texture. Medical clearance may be required before treating scars resulting from surgery, injury or burns.

What Happens During Treatment?

Your treatment begins with a detailed consultation to assess:

• Your existing hair and pattern of hair loss

• Your scalp and skin condition

• Your natural hair and skin colour

• Your preferred hairline and overall result

• Previous hair transplants, tattooing or scalp procedures

• Relevant health conditions and medications

• Whether your expectations can be achieved realistically

The hairline and treatment area are planned before pigment application begins. SMP is then built gradually over a series of appointments rather than attempting to create the entire result in one heavy session.

Most clients require approximately three to four sessions, although the number, length and spacing of appointments will depend on the treatment area, skin response and desired density.

How Long Does SMP Last?

SMP is often described as semi-permanent because the pigment gradually softens and fades. However, pigment is implanted into the skin and may not disappear completely, so the procedure should be considered a long-term cosmetic decision.

Results may remain visible for several years, but there is no guaranteed lifespan. Longevity is influenced by:

• Skin type and natural exfoliation

• Sun and ultraviolet exposure

• Pigment selection and placement

• Aftercare and skincare products

• Immune response

• Ongoing hair loss

• The use of chemical or exfoliating scalp treatments

A maintenance or colour-refresh appointment may eventually be required.

What Can I Expect Afterwards?

SMP does involve skin penetration, so the scalp requires time and appropriate care to heal. Temporary redness, tenderness, tightness or mild swelling may occur. The pigment can initially appear darker and more defined before settling into a softer result.

Most clients can return to normal daily activities relatively quickly, but the scalp must still be protected while it heals. You will receive detailed aftercare instructions, which may include temporarily avoiding:

• Heavy exercise and excessive sweating

• Swimming, spas, saunas and steam rooms

• Direct sun exposure

• Scratching, rubbing or picking the scalp

• Shaving directly over the healing area

• Unapproved scalp products

Once completely healed, regular sun protection can help reduce premature fading.

Are There Risks?

As with every cosmetic tattooing procedure, SMP carries potential risks. These can include:

• Infection

• Allergic or inflammatory reactions

• Unwanted colour changes

• Pigment spreading or blurring

• Uneven fading

• Scarring or keloid formation

• An unsuitable hairline, colour or dot pattern

• Dissatisfaction with the finished result

Correcting poorly performed SMP can be difficult and may require additional tattooing, laser removal or medical assistance. Careful consultation, conservative design and strict infection-control procedures are therefore essential.

When Should SMP Be Postponed?

Treatment may need to be postponed or declined if you have:

• An active scalp infection

• Open wounds, sunburn or broken skin

• Active psoriasis, eczema or dermatitis in the treatment area

• Unexplained, sudden or patchy hair loss that has not been medically assessed

• A history of keloid or abnormal scarring

• A condition or medication that affects healing, immunity or bleeding

• A suspicious, changing or unidentified scalp lesion

• A recent hair transplant or scalp surgery that has not completely healed

Birthmarks, moles and unidentified lesions should not simply be covered with pigment. Medical assessment may be required before treatment.
